It has remained my firm contention that many of us who fall in the latter third of Generation X and the first third of Generation Y experience an intense phase where we listen to classic rock almost exclusively. My reasoning is this – this group came of music-listening age right as the rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s (aka that of our parents) ceased being a contemporary art form and slipped into the realm of nostalgia. Thus, in attempt to seem “cool” and/or “hip” as this generation entered its teen years, our collective parentage played Zeppelin, Beatles, The Who, and Zappa records for their kids.

However, much like a couple of my guitar-playing friends, some people never truly leave behind these musical roots, resulting in acts like The Lonely H. This young, long-haired, and fresh-faced Seattle-based quartet stands tall in its dedication to the music my parents loved, and do so without a singular trace of any possible irony. The band’s new record, Concrete Class, is a shining testament to The Eagles, Kansas, and Foghat, with tidbits of outlaw country sprinkled in, and accomplishes this feat by with equal amounts rocking grit and sensitive balladry. The band could be described as a less psychedelic version of Blitzen Trapper or as the little brother of Drive By Truckers who really digs Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
