The Posies - Amazing Disgrace [May 1996]

The Posies let their true power pop colors fly but with a tougher edge by steeping the songs on their fourth album in punk rock and '70s metal. "Throwaway" is a big guitar rocker with a harmonious chorus -- the kind that became the band's calling card. The band invited Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander to sing along on "Hate Song."

Unfortunately, the elder pair's charms were lost in the mix, though "Daily Mutilation" would be a good choice of cover for their own band. "Everybody Is a Fucking Liar" takes a trip back in time with its histrionic guitar parts. Naturally, "Grant Hart" and "Broken Record" are punk rock. "Song #1" and "Will You Ever Ease Your Mind?" are the kind of gorgeous pop songs on which the band grew their reputation. Whether they tackle punk, hard rock, or soft rock, the Posies' brand of songcraft is extraordinary, though, sadly, it would appear this was their swan song.

The Posies - Dream All Day: The Best Of The Posies, Pop Underground [Mar 2000]

Compiled with Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer's full participation, Dream All Day: The Best of the Posies' 19 tracks still aren't a full career overview. Since their 1988 debut album, Failure, 1998's studio swansong Success, and 2000's live Before the Iceberg were recorded for indie imprints, none of those tracks appear here. But as an anthology of the Posies' successful and influential years on the Geffen and DGC labels, this collection is faultless.

Although they only released three albums for the majors, like any classic pop band, the Posies had a handful of obscure, non-album tracks, five of which are this disc's highlights. In his fascinating liner notes, Jon Auer explains that the Hollies were not a huge influence, yet the duo's harmonies and guitar-driven glory are a perfect match for "King Midas in Reverse," originally recorded for a little known Hollies tribute album. Their ringing cover of Big Star's Chris Bell-penned "I Am the Cosmos," an Auer favorite, is thankfully rescued from its B-side status with its inclusion here.

Other curiosities, especially "Going, Going, Gone," the band's biggest moneymaker due to its appearance on the million selling Reality Bites soundtrack, flesh out a representative selection of the Posies' best moments. Better than the cartoonish, often overrated, and inconsistent Cheap Trick (who guest on one of their tracks), the Posies balanced smart-alecky lyrics with some of the best power pop melodies to emerge from the punk scene. With remastered sound, a flawless track selection, and terrific liner notes and pictures in an affectionately assembled 20-page booklet, this is a near perfect representation of the band, recommended for both new listeners and hardcore fans.

The Posies - Failure (15th Anniversary Edition) ['04]

The Posies' first release, originally self-released on cassette in early 1988 but reissued by the noted Seattle indie Popllama later that year, was a duo record by Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer. As such, it's the most low-key of the group's original releases, with a rough, homemade charm that sounds all the more refreshing to those familiar with albums like the majestic, Hollies-like Dear 23 or the grungified Frosting on the Beater. The vaguely folky songs have echoes not only of Chris Bell's post-Big Star solo recordings, but the occasional hint of Jonathan Richman (especially on "Ironing Tuesdays") and even, dare it be said, Simon & Garfunkel. (From the beginning, Stringfellow and Auer had their choirboy harmonies down cold.)

Though Failure is probably still the least-known of all the Posies' albums, it contains at least two all-time Stringfellow-Auer classics, the impassioned "Believe in Something Other (Than Yourself)" and the wistful "Paint Me." Failure is a terrific album, made more so when one thinks of how thoroughly this set of winsome folk-rock and psych-tinged set of pop songs went against the grain of the late-'80s Seattle scene.
